Thymus serpyllum coccineus (Creeping Red Thyme)

Thyme is grown the world over as it is such a versatile plant, not only is its foliage is attractive, the flowers are long-lasting and very pretty, and it is drought tolerant - an overall easy-care plant. On top of that it is one of the most useful herbs for the kitchen. Red Creeping Thyme reaches a maximum height of 5-7 cm and with its small green leaves and bright red pink flowers on long stems, which appear in May and June, it is very decorative. It has small green aromatic leaves which are evergreen in mild conditions. This creeping thyme is suitable for planting in the rock garden, herb garden, front of a border, and even between pavers or at the edge of gravel paths, as the aromatic leaves release a lovely scent when trodden on. Red Creeping Thyme likes a well-drained light soil, which should not be too rich in nutrients, as this will encourage the plant to grow 'leggy' and lose its compact shape. Ensure that the plant is cut back after flowering to help maintain shape. Being a native of the Mediterranean it needs a place in full sun.
